Solapur District at a Glance
General Industrial Climate
The net work of 12 Sugar factories, 12
Spinning mills provide employment to 1,25,000
persons. Other major type of industries are Oil
Mills, Dal Mills, Power looms, Gray cloth, Bed
sheets, Turkish Towels, brick making, fabrication,
wooden furniture, etc. Under the Factories Act 4343
factories were registered out of that 1331 are
closed.
Large & Medium Industries.
In the district about 299 industries have
obtained IEM from Govt. of India. Out of these 98
industries have gone into production, 17 industries
are cotton gunning industries, 10 Sugar Industries,
4 Spinning Mills. The remaining are engineering,
foundry, Poultry, Pharmaceutical, Animal feed etc.
The total investment in these industries is Rs. 460
crores and per employees about 34,500 persons.
Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises.
As on 31/3/03 there were 9564 permanently registered
SSI units in the district . these units together
provided employment to about 66130 persons and a
total capital investment of Rs.195 crore . Most of
these units are engaged in bed sheets and terry
towels making, readymade garments, fabrication, dal
mills, oil mills, chemical, electrical and
electronic products, food processing etc.
Existing Industrial clusters in the district
Handloom And Power loom Industry
Solapur is the home of Handloom and Power loom
weaving industry which provides employment to a
large number of workers. There are around 8000 power
loom industries operational in the district. There
are about 25000 Power loom and about 30000 workers
are employed. On the Jackard power loom the main
production is Chaddars, Towels and Napkins. These
products are exported to various countries in the
world
A separate association for the power loom industry
owners - 'Solapur District Power loom Holders
Association' is functional to look after the welfare
of the power loom industry.
The employees working on the handloom/ power loom
machines mainly manufacture Jackard Chadders, Towels
and Napkins. These workers receive their payments on
the 'Piece Rate' basis, based on category of the
product. As the 'Piece Rates' of various products
are different there is variation in workers
earnings. As per the traditional piece rate system
the worker gets Rupees 70 to 90 per day on an
average.
Other clusters are Beedi Industry , Sugar Factories
, Raisin Making , Kum Kum Making etc.
