  National Convention on Avenues in Biotechnology for SMEs
 
    SISI Mumbai in Association with Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, NABARD, Mumbai & Bank of Maharashtra organised National Convention on Avenues in Biotechnology for SMEs on 09th – 10th December 2003 at Hotel Royal Le Meridian, Mumbai.   The Convention received overwhelming response from SSI Entrepreneurs, Students & Research Fellows. 

     

    Hon’ble Union Minister for SSI & DONER Dr. C.P. Thakur addressed the Convention. Hon’ble Minister in his speech correlated many incidents of Biotechnology from Olden Age.  He also cited amazing example of advanced Biotechnology used in Mahabharata.  He wished all success to the Biotech Convention.

     

  • A Souvenir containing 08 Nos. of Project Reports of Bio-Technology, prepared by the Chemical Division was released on the occassion.
  • Dr. Sergio Perez Talavera of Cuban Biotech Scientific Pole & Heber Biotech S.A., Representative in India presented paper during the programme on 09th Dec. 2003

    The Highlights of the proceedings of Technical Session are as under   :            
     
    09th December 2003
    The Technical Session of Agri biotech was conducted under the Chairmanship of   Shri Jayesh Bellare, of I.I.T. Bombay.  The papers on following subjects were presented
    1 Biotechnological Interventions to Generate Market potential of  medicinal & Aromatic Plants,
    2 Herbal & Aromatic – Biotech Garden for Bio Molecules
    3 Biofertilizer / Mycorrhizal Biofertilizer
    4 NABARD Financial Assistance
     
    Dr. R.Y. Ambeye, Visiting Scientist, UICT, Mumbai chaired the Session on Drugs & Pharmaceuticals during which the following papers were presented.
    1 Technology Transfer – Bio Pharmaceuticals
    2 Opportunities in Downstream Procession of Bio-Pharmaceuticals
    3 Tissue Culture Lab – Business Opportunities for SMEs.
          
     
    Under the Chairmanship of Dr. C.B.Vig, M.D. Dr. Vig Medicaments, Mumbai the technical session on Agro, Food Biotechnology, covering the following topics was held
    1 Development of Non-Conventional Products from Banana
    2 Serimone – A New Product for Tissue culture
    3 Pheromone Technology
    4 A Comprehensive and Nature friendly system for biodegradable waste management

    Dr. Padma Chavan, Associate Professor, L.T.M. College Sion, Mumbai chaired the Technical Session on Enzymes / Vaccines and Medical Diagnostic Kit.  Papers on following topics were presented.
    1 Industrial Enzymes
    2 Technology for Production of Vaccines
    3 Biotech in Diagnostic Kit Manufacturing
    4 SME Biotech Project for protein based vaccine
    5 Opportunities for SMEs in developing and promoting Diagnostic kits & Reagents
    6 A Molecular Strategy for the identification and development of cancer antibody derivatives for therapy in Breast Cancer
    A Technical Session on Bio Informatics & Marine Biotech and Nutraceuticals & Venture Capital, covering following topics was held under the chairmanship of       Dr. Usha Mukundan, Vice Principal, Jhunjunwala College, Mumbai.
